In the Gospel of John, this verse takes place shortly after Jesus' resurrection, when He appeared to His disciples in a locked room. Thomas, known as "Doubting Thomas," had missed this appearance and refused to believe unless he saw and touched Jesus' wounds himself. Jesus then met Thomas and affirmed his faith while extending a blessing to those who would believe without such direct evidence.
