Moses had previously commanded that when the Israelites entered the land, they should build an altar on Mount Ebal and perform ceremonies there (Deuteronomy 27:4-8). Mount Ebal was one of two mountains near the ancient city of Shechem, where important covenant ceremonies were to take place.
