When ye have transgressed the covenant of the LORD your God, which he commanded you, and have gone and served other gods, and bowed yourselves to them; then shall the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and ye shall perish quickly from off the good land which he hath given unto you.
In the Book of Joshua, this verse is part of Joshua's farewell speech to the Israelites after they had largely conquered the Promised Land under his leadership. Joshua, who succeeded Moses, is emphasizing the covenant God made with Israel, warning that turning to the worship of other gods would result in God's anger and expulsion from the land. This reflects the ancient Near Eastern context where loyalty to a deity was seen as essential for national survival amid surrounding polytheistic cultures.
