And now the LORD your God hath given rest unto your brethren, as he promised them: therefore now return ye, and get you unto your tents, and unto the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you on the other side Jordan.
In the book of Joshua, the Israelites had just finished their military campaigns to conquer the Promised Land after Moses led them out of Egypt. The tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh had been allocated land on the east side of the Jordan River by Moses, but they pledged to assist the other tribes in securing the western territories before settling in their own. Now that the conquest was complete and God had fulfilled His promise of rest for the people, Joshua was sending these tribes back to their possessions as a reward for their loyalty and service.
