In the book of Joshua, after the Israelites had conquered the Promised Land, the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh settled on the east side of the Jordan River, having fulfilled their duty in the conquest. When these tribes built a large altar, it raised concerns among the other tribes that it might symbolize division or unfaithfulness to God. As a result, representatives from the western tribes journeyed to Gilead to address the issue and promote unity.
