This occurs after Israel's major military victories in Canaan under Joshua's leadership. Two and a half tribes (Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh) had already received their inheritance east of the Jordan River, leaving nine and a half tribes still needing their portions of the Promised Land. Joshua, now elderly, was tasked with dividing the remaining unconquered territory among these remaining tribes.
