Only unto the tribe of Levi he gave none inheritance; the sacrifices of the LORD God of Israel made by fire are their inheritance, as he said unto them.

In the Book of Joshua, after the Israelites had conquered much of the Promised Land under Joshua's leadership, the land was being divided among the twelve tribes as a fulfillment of God's promises to their ancestors. The tribe of Levi, however, was excluded from receiving a territorial inheritance because they were designated for sacred duties as priests and caretakers of the tabernacle, serving the spiritual needs of the nation.
