This verse appears in Joshua's record of the 31 kings that Israel defeated while conquering Canaan. Jarmuth and Lachish were fortified Canaanite cities in the southern region of what would become Israel. These victories fulfilled God's promise to give the Israelites the land He had promised to Abraham centuries earlier.
