During the Israelite conquest of Canaan, Joshua led his army in battle against a coalition of Amorite kings who had allied to stop Israel's advance. After a miraculous event where God made the sun stand still to extend the daylight and secure victory, the defeated kings fled and hid in a cave at Makkedah. Joshua then issued orders to seal the cave with large stones and post guards to ensure the kings could not escape until they were dealt with.
