This verse comes right after Moses' death, when God is commissioning Joshua as the new leader of Israel. The Israelites had wandered in the wilderness for 40 years and were finally ready to enter the Promised Land of Canaan. God had made this promise centuries earlier to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and now it was time to fulfill it through Joshua's leadership.
