For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people that were men of war, which came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD: unto whom the LORD sware that he would not shew them the land, which the LORD sware unto their fathers that he would give us, a land that floweth with milk and honey.
The Israelites had been liberated from slavery in Egypt under Moses's leadership, but due to their unbelief and disobedience to God's commands, such as refusing to enter the Promised Land at His direction, they were made to wander in the wilderness for forty years. This period allowed the unfaithful generation of adults who left Egypt to die out, fulfilling God's oath that they would not see the land He promised to their ancestors. By the time Joshua took over, a new generation was prepared to inherit and conquer Canaan, the land described as flowing with milk and honey.
