This refers back to Joshua 7, when Achan secretly kept some of the plunder from Jericho that God had commanded to be destroyed. His hidden sin caused Israel to lose their next battle at Ai, and when discovered, Achan and his family were executed. The eastern tribes are now using this example to warn against actions that might bring God's judgment on all Israel.
