In the Book of Joshua, after the Israelites had conquered much of the Promised Land, the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh settled east of the Jordan River, while the other tribes remained west. When the western tribes heard that the eastern tribes had built a large altar, they worried it might signal idolatry or a break in their covenant unity, potentially leading to division.
