This occurs during the distribution of the Promised Land among the twelve tribes of Israel after their conquest of Canaan. Caleb was one of only two faithful spies (along with Joshua) who had encouraged Israel to trust God and enter the land 40 years earlier. As a reward for his faithfulness, God had promised Caleb the area around Hebron, including its fertile fields and surrounding settlements.
