This occurs during Joshua's distribution of the Promised Land among the twelve tribes of Israel after their conquest of Canaan. The tribe of Gad was one of the tribes that chose to settle on the east side of the Jordan River, along with Reuben and half of Manasseh, in territory that was fertile for livestock.
