In the Book of Joshua, the Israelites were conquering the Promised Land as part of God's command to take possession of Canaan. The Gibeonites, a local people group, had recently deceived the Israelites into a peace treaty by pretending to come from a distant land, which violated the Israelites' obligation to destroy the inhabitants. This alliance alarmed the surrounding kings, who saw it as a threat and decided to unite against Gibeon to eliminate it.
