And the LORD God prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief. So Jonah was exceeding glad of the gourd.
In the biblical narrative of the Book of Jonah, which is set in the 8th century BC during the Assyrian Empire, the prophet Jonah has just witnessed the people of Nineveh repent after his warning of judgment, leading God to spare the city. However, Jonah is deeply upset by God's mercy towards these enemies of Israel and sits outside the city in the blazing sun, overwhelmed by his anger and discomfort. God then miraculously provides a fast-growing plant, often interpreted as a gourd, to shade Jonah and alleviate his physical distress, setting the stage for a lesson on divine compassion.
