In the Book of Jonah, the prophet Jonah was sent by God to warn the city of Nineveh of their impending judgment, but he attempted to flee by boarding a ship to Tarshish. As a result, God sent a violent storm at sea, leading the sailors to throw Jonah overboard, where he was swallowed by a great fish. Inside the fish, Jonah offered a prayer of repentance, and in this verse, God commands the fish to expel Jonah onto dry land, marking his deliverance and second chance to obey.
