Jeremiah prophesied during the final decades before Jerusalem's destruction in 586 BC, when the people of Judah were breaking God's commandments while still going through the motions of temple worship. They were mixing worship of the Lord with pagan practices, including offering incense to Baal, a Canaanite fertility god that many Israelites had begun following alongside or instead of God.
