And I will punish Bel in Babylon, and I will bring forth out of his mouth that which he hath swallowed up: and the nations shall not flow together any more unto him: yea, the wall of Babylon shall fall.
During the Babylonian exile, the prophet Jeremiah delivered messages from God about the downfall of Babylon, a powerful empire that had conquered Judah and destroyed the temple in Jerusalem. Bel, the chief god of Babylon, symbolized their idolatry and arrogance, and this verse represents God's promise to expose and dismantle their false worship. This prophecy was historically fulfilled when the Persian Empire, led by Cyrus, captured Babylon in 539 BC, ending its dominance.
