This verse is part of Jeremiah's temple sermon around 609-608 BC, early in King Jehoiakim's reign. Jeremiah was commanded to stand in the temple courtyard and deliver God's warning to all who came to worship. The people of Judah had been repeatedly ignoring God's laws and following idols, despite having received clear instructions through Moses and previous prophets.
