Jehoiakim became king of Judah around 609 BC after his father Josiah died in battle against Pharaoh Neco of Egypt. This was a turbulent time when the Babylonian Empire was rising to power and would soon threaten Judah. Jehoiakim was known as a king who did evil in God's sight and often opposed the prophet Jeremiah's warnings.
