The Valley of Ben Hinnom (also called the Valley of the Son of Hinnom) was located just outside Jerusalem and had a dark history as a place where some Israelites had previously offered child sacrifices to foreign gods. By Jeremiah's time, this valley had become associated with judgment and destruction. God was instructing Jeremiah to deliver a prophetic message of coming judgment at this symbolically significant location.
