This verse comes during the reign of King Jehoiakim, around 605 BC, when Judah was facing the growing threat of Babylonian invasion. God commanded Jeremiah to write down all His prophecies of judgment in a scroll, hoping that hearing these warnings would prompt the people to repent. The kingdom of Judah had been persistently unfaithful to God through idolatry and injustice, and this was essentially God's final appeal before the destruction that would come in 586 BC.
