This command came around 605 BC during the reign of King Jehoiakim, about 18 years after Jeremiah began his prophetic ministry under King Josiah. God wanted all of Jeremiah's previous oral prophecies compiled into written form, likely because the political situation was becoming increasingly dangerous and the written word could survive even if something happened to the prophet himself.
