Isaiah spoke these words during a time when the northern kingdom of Israel and Syria had formed an alliance to attack Judah (around 735 BC). King Ahaz of Judah was terrified and considering asking Assyria for help. Isaiah was prophesying that God would protect His people and that these threatening coalitions would fail.
