This prophecy was given around 735 BC during the Syro-Ephraimite War, when Syria (under King Rezin) and the northern kingdom of Israel (Ephraim) had formed an alliance against Judah. Isaiah was reassuring King Ahaz of Judah that these threatening enemies would not prevail, as their power was merely human and temporary.
