Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.
Isaiah was a prophet in the 8th century BC during the reigns of kings like Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah in Judah, a time of spiritual decline and external threats from Assyria. In this vision, God commissions Isaiah to deliver a message to a rebellious people who had persistently ignored His laws and turned to idolatry. The verse reflects God's sovereign judgment, allowing their hearts to harden as a consequence of their unfaithfulness, making repentance more difficult.
