In the book of Acts, Paul and Silas were preaching the gospel in Philippi when they were arrested, beaten, and imprisoned for casting out a spirit from a slave girl. After a powerful earthquake shook the prison doors open, the jailer, fearing for his life and assuming the prisoners had escaped, was on the verge of suicide until Paul assured him they were all there and shared the message of salvation. As a result, the jailer and his entire household believed in Jesus, were baptized, and he expressed his new faith by welcoming Paul and Silas into his home and providing them with a meal.
