This verse occurs after Simeon and Levi killed all the men of Shechem in revenge for their sister Dinah's assault by the prince of that city. The brothers had deceived the Shechemites into getting circumcised, then attacked them while they were recovering. Ancient warfare often included taking all valuable possessions as spoils of war.
