There is Elam and all her multitude round about her grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, which are gone down uncircumcised into the nether parts of the earth, which caused their terror in the land of the living; yet have they borne their shame with them that go down to the pit.
In the book of Ezekiel, the prophet is delivering God's judgments against various nations during the time of the Babylonian exile, around the 6th century BC. Elam, an ancient kingdom located in what is now southwestern Iran, is depicted as defeated and consigned to the grave, symbolizing their downfall and shame for the terror they inflicted on others. This passage fits into a larger biblical narrative of God's sovereignty, where He holds all empires accountable for their wickedness.
