When the priests enter therein, then shall they not go out of the holy place into the utter court, but there they shall lay their garments wherein they minister; for they are holy; and shall put on other garments, and shall approach to those things which are for the people.
During the Babylonian exile in the 6th century BC, the prophet Ezekiel received visions of a restored temple in Jerusalem, which served as a message of hope and renewal for the exiled Israelites. This verse outlines specific priestly regulations to maintain holiness, requiring priests to change out of their sacred garments before entering the outer court and interacting with the people, emphasizing the strict separation between the holy and the common in ancient Israelite worship. These rules reflected the broader cultural emphasis on purity laws in the Old Testament to prevent defilement of sacred spaces.
