This occurs during the ten plagues that God sent upon Egypt to convince Pharaoh to free the Israelites from slavery. Pharaoh had just experienced the plague of flies, which had covered all of Egypt except the land of Goshen where the Israelites lived. Despite promising Moses he would let the people go if the plague was removed, Pharaoh broke his word as soon as the flies were gone.
