This genealogical record appears in the middle of God's call to Moses to lead Israel out of Egypt. The Israelites were slaves in Egypt at this time, and God was establishing Moses' credentials and family lineage. Marriage between close relatives was not uncommon in ancient times and wasn't yet prohibited under the Mosaic Law, which hadn't been given yet.
