For the LORD will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the LORD will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you.

In the book of Exodus, the Israelites were slaves in Egypt, and God was delivering them through Moses by sending a series of plagues on the Egyptians to compel Pharaoh to release them. As part of the tenth and final plague, God planned to strike down the firstborn in every Egyptian household, but He commanded the Israelites to sacrifice a lamb and mark their doorposts with its blood. This act ensured that when the destroyer passed through the land, he would see the blood and pass over the Israelite homes, sparing them from the plague.
