In the book of Exodus, the Israelites had recently been freed from slavery in Egypt and were camped at Mount Sinai, where Moses was receiving the Ten Commandments from God. While Moses was on the mountain, the people grew impatient and fashioned a golden calf to worship, which directly violated God's commands and sparked His anger. As a result, God initially planned to destroy them, but Moses interceded in prayer, leading God to relent from the threatened punishment.
