This verse is part of God's detailed instructions to Moses for building the tabernacle, the portable sanctuary where God would dwell among the Israelites during their wilderness journey. The shewbread (also called the bread of the Presence) consisted of twelve loaves representing the twelve tribes of Israel, placed on a special golden table in the Holy Place. Fresh bread was to be placed there every Sabbath by the priests as a continual offering before the Lord.
