This verse comes during the Israelites' wilderness journey after leaving Egypt, when God provided manna (bread from heaven) to feed them daily. God was establishing the pattern of the Sabbath rest by providing double portions on the sixth day so the people wouldn't need to gather food on the seventh day. This was both a test of their obedience and a gift of rest.
