In the book of Exodus, the Israelites had grown numerous in Egypt, leading a new Pharaoh to fear their strength and enslave them. He commanded the Hebrew midwives, Shiphrah and Puah, to kill newborn boys to control the population, but they feared God and refused to obey. As a result, God rewarded their faithfulness by blessing them with families and prosperity.
