This verse describes the conclusion of the Jews' defense against their enemies in the Persian Empire around 473 BC. The capital city of Shushan required an extra day of fighting compared to other cities because of the larger number of enemies there. This event led to the establishment of the festival of Purim, which Jews still celebrate today.
