This verse is part of Moses' recap of how the Promised Land was divided among the Israelite tribes after their victories over Kings Sihon and Og. Machir was the eldest son of Manasseh (who was Joseph's son), and his descendants received this fertile, mountainous region called Gilead on the east side of the Jordan River. This land distribution happened before the Israelites crossed into the main part of the Promised Land.
