And that the whole land thereof is brimstone, and salt, and burning, that it is not sown, nor beareth, nor any grass groweth therein, like the overthrow of Sodom, and Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboim, which the LORD overthrew in his anger, and in his wrath:
In the book of Deuteronomy, Moses is delivering a farewell address to the Israelites, renewing their covenant with God as they stand on the brink of entering the Promised Land. He uses the destruction of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboim as a vivid example from earlier biblical history, where these cities were obliterated by God's wrath due to rampant sin and moral corruption. This warning underscores the real and historical consequences of covenant-breaking, drawing from events described in Genesis to emphasize God's justice.
