Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse.
In the biblical book of Daniel, set during the Babylonian exile around the 6th century BC, Daniel and his three friends were taken to Babylon as captives and selected for training in the king's palace to serve in his court. They requested to avoid the king's rich food and wine, which might have been offered to idols, in order to remain faithful to their Jewish dietary laws and not defile themselves. As a result, the steward overseeing them agreed to provide vegetables and water instead, as described in this verse.
