But seek not Bethel, nor enter into Gilgal, and pass not to Beersheba: for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, and Bethel shall come to nought.
In the 8th century BC, the prophet Amos was sent by God to confront the Northern Kingdom of Israel about their widespread idolatry and corruption of worship practices. Bethel and Gilgal were ancient religious sites that had originally been places of genuine encounters with God, such as Jacob's vision at Bethel, but by Amos's time, they had become centers of empty rituals and pagan influences. Beersheba, located in the Southern Kingdom, was also a site people turned to for false security, and Amos warned that judgment in the form of captivity and destruction was coming due to their unfaithfulness.
