This proverb comes from King Solomon's collection of wisdom sayings, written around 950 BC. In ancient Israel, lions were real dangers in wilderness areas, but finding one in city streets would be extremely unlikely. Solomon used this exaggerated scenario to illustrate how people create unrealistic fears to justify their laziness.
