The Levites were the priestly tribe of Israel who didn't receive a territorial inheritance like the other tribes, but instead were given specific cities scattered throughout Israel to live in. These cities came with surrounding pasturelands where they could graze their animals and grow food. A cubit was approximately 18 inches, so this would be about 1,500 feet of land extending from each city wall.
