This census was taken near the end of Israel's 40-year journey in the wilderness, just before they entered the Promised Land. It was the second major census recorded in Numbers (the first was in chapter 1), and it counted men aged 20 and older who could serve in the army. Remarkably, this number was very close to the first census count of 603,550, showing that despite plagues, wars, and wilderness hardships, God had preserved His people.
