And Balaam rose up in the morning, and said unto the princes of Balak, Get you into your land: for the LORD refuseth to give me leave to go with you.

In the Book of Numbers, the Israelites are encamped near the land of Moab as they journey toward the Promised Land, and King Balak of Moab fears their vast numbers and military strength. He sends princes with an offer to Balaam, a pagan prophet known for his divinations, to curse the Israelites and weaken them. When God directly intervenes and tells Balaam not to go with the princes or curse His people, Balaam initially obeys by sending the messengers away.
