This verse is part of the first census Moses conducted of Israel's twelve tribes while they camped in the wilderness of Sinai, about a year after leaving Egypt. The census counted all men aged 20 and older who were able to serve in the military. Dan was one of Jacob's twelve sons, and his descendants had grown into a large, strong tribe by this time.
