Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom, that dwellest in the land of Uz; the cup also shall pass through unto thee: thou shalt be drunken, and shalt make thyself naked.
Lamentations was written by the prophet Jeremiah during the Babylonian exile, following the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC, as a series of laments over Judah's suffering. Edom, a nation descended from Esau and located in what is now modern-day Jordan, had a long history of conflict with Israel and often rejoiced in their misfortunes, even aiding the Babylonians in the invasion. In this verse, Jeremiah is prophesying that Edom will face God's judgment for their role in Judah's downfall, using the metaphor of a cup of wrath to symbolize divine punishment.
